Here’s what to know about what stays and goes in a home when you move.

What stays with the home when you move out of it, and what can you expect to be in the home when you move into it? Buying or selling a home is thrilling, but there’s so much happening that it’s sometimes difficult to remember what stays with the home and what goes with the sellers when they move. In Northern Virginia, our contract states that existing fixtures and equipment transfer with the home, including shades, blinds, and window treatment hardware. It also states that shrubs and existing trees also stay with the home.

Commonly, kitchen appliances stay, such as the stove, refrigerator, built-in microwave, etc. Other items such as window treatments and washers and dryers vary, so check your contract to see what it says. Many homes have wall-mounted TVs, and our contract states that unless otherwise indicated in writing, the existing electrical components and devices do not transfer with the house, but the wall-mounted brackets do. So as buyers and sellers, clarify whether you think the TVs should stay or not.

It’s crucial to have a clear understanding of what stays and goes when buying or selling a home. If you have further questions about what stays and what goes or any other real estate matter, please don’t hesitate to contact us via phone or email. We would love to help you.
